The past several years has seen the emergence of interpersonal neurobiology to the forefront of the mental health professions. However, counselor training programs have neglected to include even the basic neuroscience learning in the curriculum. This presentation will focus on introducing Porges' Polyvagal theory as it is related to automatic threat response systems. Attendees will be able to enhance their counseling and diagnostic skills through understanding this theory.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will become familiar with current threat response systems through Polyvagal theory.

  2. Participants will gain understanding of the importance of knowing brain development and plasticity as well as basic neurobiology to better address clients’ needs.

  3. Participants will develop an integrative therapeutic framework using Polyvagal theory.
