Original Air Date: March 18, 2022 at 9:30AM

In this training, attendees are presented with information on how to determine when couples are appropriate for couples counseling. This information is helpful for all counselors including those who do not specialize in couples therapy. Understanding when couples are appropriate for couples counseling can also assist with providing appropriate recommendations and referrals to clients and couples. In this training, attendees will also become familiar with the systems perspective, be aware of costs and benefits of individual and dyad assessment models and explore their role as a couples therapist.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will become familiar with a basic understanding of the systems perspective and how it applies to working with couples.

  2. Participants will learn how to assess clients for appropriateness of couples counseling including contraindications of couples counseling.

  3. Participants will be made aware of costs and benefits of incorporating individual assessment in couples counseling versus a dyad-only assessment model.

  4. Participants will begin to explore the professional role as a couples therapist.
