The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) was released in March 2022. This revision reflects substantive scientific advances made over the last nine years since the publication of DSM-5. This presentation will provide an overview of the DSM-5-TR revisions, including general information and development, changes in the new edition, and updated disorders. Some of the most significant revisions covered in this presentation include prolonged grief disorder, suicidal behavior and nonsuicidal self-injury, severity specifiers for manic episodes, the addition of course specifiers to adjustment disorder, cultural concepts, and more.

  1. Describe the DSM-5-TR development process.

  2. Identify changes between the DSM-5 and the DSM-5TR.

  3. Identify at least three revisions in the DSM-5-TR.

  4. Describe at least two implications of the DSM-5-TR revisions to diagnosis and clinical practice.

MEET OUR SPEAKER

Dayle Jones, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the University of Central Florida (UCF) Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.  A counselor educator for 26 years, Dr. Jones currently serves as Principal and co-Principal Investigator for multiple federally funded grants through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which focus on counselor workforce education and training.  She has multiple refereed publications and textbooks, as well as made numerous professional presentations at state, regional, national and international counseling conferences.  She has provided numerous professional presentations specifically about the DSM-5 upon its release in 2013. At UCF, she has taught graduate courses in diagnosis, assessment, addictions counseling, and family violence, as well as provided clinical supervision for students in practicum and internship.  She is also past coordinator of the UCF Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
