"BDSM 101 For Therapist"

By Stefanie Meyer-Goodwin, LMHC, LMFT, NCC, CCMHC

October 16, 2020

Members of the kink community frequently report difficulty finding therapists that have basic knowledge of BDSM (Bondage & Discipline, Domination & Submission, Sadism & Masochism) and fear that therapists will negatively judge their relational and sexual practices. In culturally competent practice the burden of educating therapists does not rest with the client. This presentation provides an overview of the range of kink identities and practices, methods of differentiating between healthy kink dynamics and abusive relationships, approaches to affirming therapy, and resources for additional support and education. Participants will leave this presentation with information to enhance their skills in assessing and treating members of the kink community from an empowering and affirming stance.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Define basic terminology related to kink identities and practices

  2. Differentiate between Risk Aware Consensual Kink and abusive practices

  3. Learn how to apply the PLISSIT model to working with kinky clients

  4. Identify community resources and supports
