Presentation Summary:

During this presentation, we will talk about gaming disorder, electronics addiction and discuss how much electronics kids should have, based on suggestions by the American Association of Pediatrics, with a twist. The material will explore comparisons between Fortnite and Heroin addiction; including the mention of societal studies and conclusions made in the UK, the World Health Organization and the US Surgeon General. This program includes Vaping, as this is another major problem new to this generation, whereas the US Surgeon General labeled an Epidemic and gave the FDA an “F” for how they are regulating these devices.  Finally, we will discuss how todays Marijuana is not your grandfather’s pot!  You will learn that drug dealers modified the pot to have higher amounts of THC and up to 8 times less medical benefit (CBD).

Learning objectives:

  • Participants will learn about the impact of electronics addiction: how social media effects self-esteem, body image, cutting, cyber-bullying.
  • Participants will learn how video games are making kids stay inside, not do schoolwork and quit sports teams (similar to the impact of illegal drugs).
  • Participants will explore how we can rewire the reward circuitry in the gaming addict’s brain and re-engage society.
  • Participants will address the changes of nicotine addiction; with consideration on how Big Tobacco hooked the next generation, and how the new Marijuana can be addictive and cause psychosis.
  • Participants will also learn to incorporate ways to help parents, teens and young adults quit addictions and get their lives back.
