Presentation Summary: 

This presentation will give an evidence-based clinical framework for both sex addiction and personality disorder while addressing their complicated intersection in regards to both diagnosis and treatment.

Learning Objectives: 

1. Participants of this training will learn what the criteria of Sex Addiction are (non-DSM-5 criteria).

2. Participants of this training will learn what the DSM-5 criteria of certain personality disorders are, specifically BPD (Borderline personality disorder) and NPD (Narcissistic personality disorder).

3. Participants of this training will learn the general differences between Sex Addiction and Personality Disorder.

4. Participants of this training will learn clinical considerations for both diagnosis and treatment.

Speaker Bio: Christopher M. Burns is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist, and he is trained in EMDR. He founded REWRITE RECOVERY to create an intimate space for Christian men to begin their healing journey as they write new chapters in their lives.

Chris grew up in San Jose, California and moved to Florida in 2001. He has his own recovery story which influences his heart for those trapped inside their addiction. He is passionate about recovery and the life that it provides. Chris attributes his personal recovery journey to Jesus. Chris also employs the latest in evidenced-based research into his therapeutic workshops, believing that all Truth is God's Truth.

Chris earned his Master's degree in Social Work from The University of Central Florida. While in school, Chris worked closely with UCF students struggling with substance abuse and addiction. He helped create, develop, and launch the Sober Knights and the Collegiate Recovery Community where he served as the CRC Coordinator from 2014-2017. From 2017-2022 Chris worked at the highest levels of care for both substance use and mental health at the Residential level of care.

Chris also served on the Board of Directors for Hand In Hand, a Christian, Faith-Based in-house recovery community, from 2018-2020. He has been involved in church leadership since 2011. Chris served as the reGROUP Worship and Training Coordinator at Summit Church from 2011-2015 where he taught recovery curriculum, trained leaders to facilitate recovery groups, and led the congregation in worship. He served as the Communications Director for theCross Church in Mount Dora, Florida from 2015-2020.

Chris is currently the Healing Minister at theCross where he oversees ministries such as Restoration Nights, GriefShare, Stephen Ministry and DivorceCare. Chris also enjoys writing worship music and working on carpentry projects. He loves to build things for his wife that she finds on Pinterest.
