Presentation Summary:  

This presentation will enhance attendee’s ability to articulate a broader understanding of the development of an eating disorder including the relationship with attachment injuries, negative life experiences, weight discrimination and self-limiting beauty and body ideals. Attendees will have an opportunity to expand their case conceptualization and to understand multiple purposes of eating disorder behaviors in a distressed system. This presentation will highlight the importance of creating a safe and affirming therapeutic space for all bodies, all humans, and all identities. Attendees will leave the presentation with several techniques to implement in their work with clients to enhance overall stabilization and foster their client’s sense of curiosity, compassion and connection with one’s self, one’s parts, and one’s body. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to summarize factors involved in the development of an eating disorder and identify the relationship between eating disorders, attachment injuries, negative life experiences, weight discrimination, and self-limiting beauty and body ideals.

2. Participants will be able to identify three functions of disordered eating behaviors in a distressed system.

3. Participants will be able to describe at least three helpful interventions that foster their client’s sense of curiosity, compassion and connection with one’s self, one’s parts, and one’s body.

Speaker Bio: 

Marnie Davis, is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Consultant, and Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant. Marnie has specialized training in Brain spotting and Mindfulness-based stress reduction. She has served as the Continuing Education Co-Chair for the Central Florida iaedp Chapter for several years, previously serving in other various board positions including president. Marnie is a chapter author in the edited book, Trauma-Informed Approaches to Eating Disorders. She is a seasoned presenter and consultant. She enjoys speaking to various audiences including her most recent, Nurturing the Dance of Healing: Eating Disorders and EMDR at the 2024 EMDRIA Summit. Marnie was featured in EMDRIA’s Focal Point Blog and Let’s Talk EMDR Podcast, where she discussed eating disorders and EMDR.

Marnie is the owner of a private practice in Maitland, FL, where she specializes in the treatment of eating disorders, body dysmorphia, trauma, PTSD, and co-occurring difficulties. Marnie has experience working in higher levels of care settings and is a Health at Every Size®-aligned clinician. She believes in respecting human diversity, health equity and creating a body affirming and self-affirming therapeutic environment. Marnie holds social justice, advocacy and community service in high regard. She was a board member for the Eating Disorder Network of Central Florida for many years and currently serves as a volunteer for the National Alliance for Eating Disorders, Orlando Affiliate, helping to support recovery and fundraising for recovery support services.
