Counseling Caregivers: Building Resiliency Through Advocacy


Speaker:  Gregory A. Dawson, PhD


Description:

This 1 hour workshop will include lecture, answer/discussion.  The focus will be on familial and non-familial caregivers for elderly and terminally ill patients. The presenter is a therapist and has been a caregiver to family members providing a unique perspective.   

 

Goals


1.  Attendees will become familiar with the literature about the issues facing caregivers of elderly and terminally ill patients, both family member and non-family member caregivers.   

 

2 To provide participants with a time for discussion and questions related to counseling caregivers.

Speaker Bio:

Gregory A Dawson Ph.D. Associate Professor

Counseling and Psychology, Troy University,

Orlando Site.

 

Dr. Dawson began his career in adult probation in 1973 after graduation from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.  Greg completed his masters in Mental Health Counseling in 1977 and began working as a Psychology Assistant in a community mental health center in Springfield, Ohio.  He enrolled in a Doctoral Program in Counseling at Ohio University in 1980 completing the degree and post doctoral internship in June of 1983.  He was in private practice for over twenty four years.  He also was a co-founder and Psychological Services Director of the Midwest Center for Head Pain Management in Troy, Ohio.  The center was a multidisciplinary research and clinical facility dedicated to the treatment of head and facial pain where Dr. Dawson honed his research skills.    


Currently Dr. Dawson is an Associate Professor of Counseling and Psychology for Troy University, Orlando Site.  He is active in AMHCA and FMHCA and has presented workshops and research papers at numerous national and state conferences including American Pain Society, AMHCA, ACES and FCA.  Dr. Dawson is a CEU provider through CE broker for Troy and hosts a workshop and poster session for his Research Methodology Students twice a year co-hosted by the Greater Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce to benefit their scholarship fund.  Currently his practice is limited to research and program evaluation consulting.
